Confession this world I know it is used for religious purposes like to (make|do?) confession in the church

but can we use it to describe the confession for a criminal in the court?

Thanks

Yes, that is a common use of the word. Nowadays, probably more criminals confess than do penitents.

Thanks for your answer

penitent is new vocabulary, when I searched for it, it's like the person has returned to his faith, I think it's more a religious meaning.

But confession is used in both situations: the religiously and in the courts, if I'm right about it.
