Conditionals

"My friend's dad knew my parents had left me by myself in the house because they knew my friend was coming to visit shortly so I wouldn't be alone after all and when he came to pick her up later, my parents were still not back so he had the good sense to know that he was expected to wait until my parents got back. So he stayed and waited. Because if he took my friend, I'd be alone in the house and he knew my parents wouldn't be happy about that."

In the passage above, "Because if he took my friend, I'd be alone in the house" is a second conditional, whereas the passage itself refers to an incident in the past.
Is it okay to use the second conditional like this instead of the third; "Because if he had taken my friend, I would have been alone in the house" in a situation where the second conditional is used to refer to something that was just a hypothetical consideration at the time although the event is a past one.
