The police WOULD HAVE never found the corpse if they HADN'T HAD the assistance of an old man. They WOULDN'T HAVE BELIEVED he could help them if he HADN'T PERFORMED some remarkable feats ealier. He said that if he WAS younger, he'D lead them to the body even more quickly than he had: his reactions WOULD be quicker and he wouldn't hesitate a couple of times.

"If you HADN'T SUCCEEDED more rapidly, we WOULD HAVE FELT that it was almost a miracle.", said the local sergeant.

"If you (offer) me a pint of ale. i (think) that was a miracle", retorted the old man, adding: "And if i WERE as careful with my money as you are with yours, i WOULD'VE BECOME a rich man by now.

"If you HAD LEARNED how to respect my authority, you might have become a police sergeant."
