What does it mean that:
" If I take on d7[=the name of a square], I threaten Back Rank Mate[=a mate that may occur on the last rank]"?

That seems OK to me. I believe it is called present narrative tense and it looks fine to me. The speaker is saying how things are, as they progress, and they can use the present tense in both halves of the sentence

Perhaps that is used more in informal writing or in fiction
