Conditional type 2

Hello dear experts.

As all grammar books say in conditional sentences type we must use were in all cases. What if the sentence is in passive voice? Does the rule stand correct?

Top answer

" "If I was/were asked to resign, I would refuse". We use "were" in formal English, but often "was" in everyday English. In colloquial contexts, "were" may sound a bit pedantic to some ears, especially other than in the first person.

It's the same in passive voice as in active:

"If I was/were rich, I would buy a big house."
"If I was/were asked to resign, I would refuse".
