Conditional tenses?

I have always said "if I were to......" when proposing something or when refering to a hypothtical situation. I recently heard someone say "if I was to......" in a similar situation. I initially assumed this to be incorrect but then thought that 'was' does generally apply to 'I' and 'were' generally applies to 'we'. So have I been saying the wrong thing all these years? Thanks.

" when proposing something or when refer r ing to a hypoth e tical situation. This is correct, but "was" is also used so much that it has gained acceptance. You can quite safely continue to use "were".
