Conditional tense

We came across this tense in school:

If we had known about your problems we would have helped you?

But can I change would for instance into could??

Top answer

Yes, you can use 'could' and 'might' apart from 'would' in third conditional clause. If we'd known your problems, we could have helped you. If they'd told me, I might have helped them.
