conditional sentences while narrting

my problem wilth (if)occurs when i read a story , because the writer always uses the past tense and i dont know wether its a real case or un real. for example.: he loved he so much . if she agreed he would marry her . is it real case or unreal?

I'm not sure I exactly understood what Anon meant either. But there is one point that interests me here: Is it at all likely to find a sentece like "If she agreed he would marry her." in a story told in past tenses? It seems to me that this sentence is about an unreal situation in the present, i.e. she doesn't agree but if she did he would marry her. To convey the same meaning in
