Conditional sentences

Hi there:

Could someone please tell me which the correct choice would be for the blanks in the following sentence?

If you ______________ for some more time, you ___________ so tired.

a. had slept / wouldn't feel
b. slept / wouldn't feel

I'd pick "a", but I'm not absolutely sure if "b" is incorrect. I think "b" is possible, too. I'd like to have your opinions, please.

Thank you.

Only the first blank makes any difference. had slept refers to past time in this conditional, and slept refers to present or future time. wouldn't feel refers to present or future time.

  • Only the first blank makes any difference.
  • had slept refers to past time in this conditional, and slept refers to present or future time.
  • wouldn't feel refers to present or future time.
  • Thus, b is more like advice for the present and future, while a is more like a comment on something that has already happened.
  • Both are possible.

I didn't understand this part of your reply, I'm afraid. You said 'had slept' refers to past, while 'slept' refers to the present or future, and then you said 'a' is an advice for present or future. For 'b', you said tha
