Conditional sentence: type 3

Hi everyone,

I have some questions about conditional sentence type 3.

Can someone else answer me?

Here is the questions:

1. The ground was very soft. But for that, my house (win).

2. But for his quickness I (be) killed.

Thanks in advance. ^^

1. The ground was very soft. But for that, my house would have won.

2. But for his quickness I would have been killed.

Are they correct? I am uncertain of my answers.

Could you tell me the meaning of "but for"?

I appreciate that.

2. But for his quickness, I would have been killed. - This is fine. 'But for' means
