Conditional sentence

Hi, I have one question about conditional. While I was preparing toefl test, I found this question in grammar section.

"____ become blocked so that heat and moisture could not escape, death would result."

I chose this answer.

"If the pores of the skin become blocked so that heat and moisture could not escape, death would result."

But answer of this question is

"Were the skin's pores to become blocked so that heat and moisture could not escape, death would result."

i know above sentence is conditional, and it's main format is

"If the skin's pores were to become blocked so that heat and moisture could not escape, death would result."

But since both my choice and the answer are conditional sentences, I do not understand why my choice is wrong. Is it because of phrase "so that" in given sentence?

I tried to figure out this problem by myself, but I still can't clear get it.
Hope to have a answer. Thanks!

Your answer would have been right if you had used "became" instead of "become". "Become" would have gone with "cannot escape" and "death will result".

Oh.. right. I missed verb tense!
But if the only problem is tense, I still have a question.
If I had chosen "became" instead "become", then..

"Were the skin's pores to become blocked so that heat and moisture could not escape, death would result."
and "If the pores of the skin became blocked so that heat and moisture could not escape, death would result."
