I have the following sentence.

"They thoght, If they gave freedom to their children on that subject, they would break the law."

"That subject" is explained in previous sentence in the text. Is the structure Ok?

It is ambiguous. Who will break the law, the parents by allowing their children to do that, or the children, who, by exercising that freedom, would violate the law?

This version removes the ambiguit
