“The migrants will be given up to $3,500 (£2,600) for leaving within the next 90 days.
They will be given the option of going to their ‘home country’ or third countries.
If they do not leave, the Israeli authorities have threatened that they will start jailing them from April.”

This is an extract from BBC news. These migrants came from two countries (Eritrea and Sudan). Does anyone know why ‘home country’ was used instead of ‘home countries’? Is there such a usage that ‘home country’ can be used in this way ‘generically: not referring to any country or any number of countries and therefore it is not subjected to the usual rule just like in the case of ‘third countries’ in the same extract above?

Yes, 'home country' is fine. The writer was probably thinking that each migrant has one home country, which is true.
