I'm not a lawyer, but here's my understanding.

The legal profession in England involves solicitors and barristers. Both can be consideredl 'lawyers'; but the two terms indicated are the common ones.
A solicitor prepares a brief on behalf of a client, but a solicitor does not appear in (most) courts.
The brief is given to a barrister, who appears in court as an advocate for
