He was hit by a car. When she got to him, she tried to keep him awake but he moved in and out of conciousness.

Is the bolded natural? Is there another way of saying it?

It's quite natural. We speak of losing and regaining conciousness, but your original is the only one I can think of which implies a recurring cycle - at least, it's the most concise. - A.
