Rainy as it was, the street wasn't wet.

Does the sentence above sound natural to you native speakers?

While can have two meanings - one meaning "during the time that" and the other being "although." I read #2 (at first) as saying "During the time it was raining" and realized that it wasn't what you meant. You could subsitute "although" for "while" and it would make sense.

I don't find either unnatural; the first seems to convey a sense of "relishing" the rain, though I'm not sure I could explain why.
