Vocabulary

concentrate (noun) vs concentrate (verb)

Hi,

(1) I wonder if the last syllable in the noun "concentrate" and the verb "to concentrate" is pronounced exactly the same way?

(2) I have a more general question about words ending in 'ate'.

There are pairs

delegate ( N vs V),
aggregate ( N+A vs V),
postulate (N vs V), etc. (variety 1)

in which the suffix '-ate' is pronounced differently in diffferent forms.
On the other hand there are words like "concentrate" (variety 2).

Would it be correct to say that the first variety is much larger than the second one?
Could you give me more examples belonging to variety 2?

(1) Yes. (2) I think so, yes. Some more examples of "variety 2" include (in at least some dialects): reprobate, precipitate, fulminate, agglomerate, agglutinate, lactate, hydrate, state, sedate, and update.

  • There are probably more.

MUSCOVITEThere are pairs ...
The only list I could find on the forum was one I made long ago. It's not exactly what you want, but it's something.

Really? Those are all Variety 1, and I thought you wanted a list of Variety 2.

Note the difference between

"It is exactly what I need"

and

"It is exactly what I needed (yesterday)" :-) :-)
