Compund or Complex sentence

Hi
Please see the two sentences below:
  1. I went although I was not invited.
  2. I went but I was not invited
Which one is complex and which one is compound and why?

I am quite confused, the definitions seems to say that if the clauses are independent then the sentence is compound. All the examples I came across seem to

a. Include the conjunction while mentioning that the clause is not independent. Like the clause 'Although I was not invited'

b. Not to include the conjunction while mentioning that the cluase is independent. Like 'I was not invited'. Note that 'But' is excluded.

Thanks

'But' is a coordinating conjunction ; hence, #2 is compound. 'But I was not invited' can possibly stand as an independent sentence. 'Although' is a subordinating conjunction ; hence, #1 is complex.

  • 'But' is a coordinating conjunction ; hence, #2 is compound.
  • 'But I was not invited' can possibly stand as an independent sentence.
  • 'Although' is a subordinating conjunction ; hence, #1 is complex.
  • 'Although I was not invited' cannot stand alone.

Thank You.

So the conjunction in question plays an important role?

I was sort of misled by the definitions that seem to stress on the independence of the clauses in order to determine if a sentence is compound or complex.

You were not mislead; coordinating conjunctions separate independent clauses, while subordinating conjunctions separate independent from dependent clauses. Your problem is that you cannot separate coordinating from subordinating conjunctions. I suggest that you do a Google search for both and study them.
