Vocabulary

compromise

Would you please explain what exactly it meant from "compromise" in the following paragraph?

P.S. I've heard Janis Joplin quote :
Don't compromise yourself. You are all you have got.
Which I guess it means do not count yourself underdog or do respect yourself.

I think when you start to compromise yourself, that’s when you get married. That’s what that’s appropriate for. I think it’s good to compromise in general in relationships, but I don’t believe that you should compromise yourself fully until you’re partnering with someone on that marriage level.

She uses it with two basic meanings, though I think she has muddled them somewhat: I think it’s good to compromise ( = to settle differences by mutual concessions ) in general in relationships, but I don’t believe that you should compromise ( = to expose or make vulnerable ) yourself fully until you’re partnering with someone on that marriage level.

1. As I said, I think she is mixing the meanings; it is a bit of both.
2. 'That' (the demonstrative adjective) is necessary. Marriages have different levels of commitment (at least mine did).
