comprehension problems

Hi, well im having great difficulties in understanding the meaning of some passages from "Pride & Prejudice" which are written in capital letters :
"Mr.Collins and Charlotte appreared at the door, and the carriage stopped at the small gate which led by short gravel walk to the house,AMIDST THE NODS and smiles of the whole party ."
and also ,"I am sure there is not on his. i will answer for it , he never cared THREE STRAWS about her-who could about such a nasty little frickled thing?"

Top answer

The first one shows that the people meeting the carriage were nodding and smiling at Mr. Collins and Charlotte. The second one is an idiomatic phrase, which you don't hear used much anymore.

'Tis is a shortened form of it is. (Not really used anymore; we say it'sthese days.) The person is saying he/she despises a particular way of behaviour. I would need a little more context to explain more.

There is a continuation after it which is "If he wants our society let him seek it.He knows where we live .I will not spend my hours in running after my neighbours every time they go away and come back again" here that personal pronoun" He" refers to a person called Wickham .

Here the speaker is describing the behaviour of trying to make contact with people who may not be eager to do so themselves. Maybe this is the etiquette that is despised, or maybe it was something described in previous sentences.
