Comprehension

(By the way, is the sentence above correct?)

Nanosight has developed a way of sinthetically reproducing a version of what happens when the body first detects a virus, using computer and microelectronic technololgy.

Is 'reproducing' in this particular case a noun or a verb?

What is considered by 'version'?

I don't understand if this is only computer simulation or it has to do something with using nanothechnology directly on humans. What can be concluded from the context?

And the only following sentence is :

This techniuque is not limited to detecting biowarfare viruses but can speed up drug development and dramatically reduce costs for pharmaceutical companies.

Thanks a lot in advance.
