Compound words

Should we also modify 'twenty-one' for example when it is one hundred and twenty one?

1. Use hyphens with compound numbers between twenty-one and ninety-nine. For example:

  • twenty-one
  • forty-five
  • seventy-seven
  • ninety-nine


    • Also use hyphens to separate numerators and denominators in fractions. For example:

    • one-half
    • two-thirds
    • five-eights
    • three-tenths


      • What about one-and-a-half?

      Should we use the hyphen when these numbers above modify nouns, as well as when they don't modify anything?

Should we keep the hyphens whether they are used as adjectives or nouns? In other words, do we hyphenate them when they are compound nouns as well as compound modifiers?

I saw twenty-three people (adj)

Twenty-three is the number (noun)

OR

Twenty three is the number (noun)
