Compound sentences

Hello everyone, I am taking English classes and have a question regarding the test I took today. Kindly find below sentences first.

1. "Michael and Sam gave Paul and me some tips on how to throw a basketball, but they didn't help with our form."
2. "Tariq and Jordan joined the soccer game and helped the team win."

My question is that why does the first sentence need a comma but not the second sentence? Is it because of the subject "they" ? If I add "they" into the second sentence, and then the second sentence will require a comma like this "Tariq and Jordan joined the soccer game, and they helped the team win." ?

Thank you very much!
