Compound sentence possible with semicolon?

Hi. Please tell me if it is correct to have a compound sentence on one side (either to the left or the right) of a semicolon. Thank you for your help in advance.

Yes, it's alright. Just a few small mistakes...

The couple didn't take their sons to the pizzeria as they had promised; consequently, the older/elder son isn't speaking to them and the younger son refuses to smile at them.

In terms of grammar, such a sentence is correct. But in terms of meaning, I fail to see what you wish to convey to the reader by the semi-colon.
