Compound Predicates

a. There is no example of its use where I come from, not one instance of it in any authoritative sources.

1) Are we meant to treat the emboldened words in both pairs of sentences as second predicates or new independent clauses with the subject and verb omitted (I had & There is)?

a. I searched the attic, looking for the photo album I (had) misplaced.

b. I was searching the attic, looking for the photo album I (had) misplaced.

2) The emboldened words in a is a participial phrase. What about the emoldened words in b? Is it a participial phrase also, or just a second predicate with an omitted 'and'?
