Compound adjectives

Are both these sentences correct:

a) "It's not easy to become a top of the league football player."

b) "It's not easy to become a high-ranking football player."

Note: By 'top of the league' or 'high-ranking football player', I mean one of the highest level (such as Leonel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo).

You can make a multi-word adjective of any length you want, but be aware that beyond a certain limit it becomes comical. This one is OK in its setting, but it needs hyphens when it comes before: "It's not easy to become a top-of-the-league football player."
