Compouind sentence with semicolon

Hi. Please help. Is it correct to have a compound sentence on one side of a sentence with a semicolon like the example sentence below? I think the part on the left of the semicolon in the sentence below is a compound sentence although it doesn't have a comma before "and."

He ran out the room abruptly and the dog closely followed him out; by then just about everyone had left the room.
