Comply with code or up to code

Which is correct? Comply with or up to? Is it natural to say 'adapt our lifestyle accordingly'?The stairs in our house don't comply with construction code/aren't up to code and we have to adapt our lifestyle accordingly meaning we don't go up and down the stairs as much as we want to as we have to duck and since we are old, it really hurts our back.
