Complex use of brackets

Hello,

I'm a science PhD student, and have recently had a sentence flagged as having 'untidy punctuation'. The sentence reads

... choosing carefully areas of `normal' oceanic crust (i.e. excluding areas where gravity suggested there was significant positive or negative dynamic support, no areas of thickened crust such as seamounts etc.).

The reason the sentence was flagged was the consecutive .). which I believe to be necessary, due to the inclusion of the Latin abbrerviation etc. Am I correct, and if not, how should I construct this?

Many thanks,

JW

I don't see a need for the brackets. Apart from that, etc is generally not followed by a stop these days.
