Complex sentence

I was just thinking of something like this: What I could not give you yesterday, that I shall give you today.

My question: is 'that' correct here (because I am assuming that follows 'what', which is the object I intend to give)?

thanks.

Top answer

What I could not give you yesterday that I shall/will give you today. This would be more natural as, "Today I shall/will give you what I could not give you yesterday". As 'what' conveys the idea of 'that ..

  • What I could not give you yesterday that I shall/will give you today.
  • This would be more natural as, "Today I shall/will give you what I could not give you yesterday".
  • As 'what' conveys the idea of 'that ..
  • which', we do not use an additional 'that'.
