Am I right in the understanding of these two sentences"
- The manuscript was thought to be lost. (the equivalent of the Participle2: It was considered lost)
-The manuscript was thought to have been lost. (They thought that the manuscript had been lost) ???
Hi Olive The two sentences say much the same thing. To my mind, the only slight difference is that the second may hint that there was an event when the manuscript was lost. The sentence could introduce a paragraph that explains when the manuscript was thought to have been lost: a fire in a church, war, a mismanaged library, or some such reason The first sentence just tells us that people thought of it as a lost manuscript, perhaps lost long ago and we may never know how or when Hope this helps, Dave
