Grammar

Complex adjective

Hello,

I'd like to know which is a correct grammar of an adjective:
- different mode supported (machine)
- different modes supported (machine)

I know that, if the adjective is less complex, such as "different mode machine", "mode" is without "s" because it's an adjective. But in this case I'm not sure.

Thanks.

  • Yes, that's true.
  • eg a multiple-mode switch, a single-copy setting.
  • However, note that hyphens are normally used in cases like these.

Hi,

Thanks, Clive. But I'd like to know if there is rules for this example. Sometimes, an adjective is indeed necessary. For example I'd like to make a list:
- adj1 machines
- adj2 machines
- adj3 machines...

For simplicity and conformity, an ajective is indispensable.

Hi,
But I'd like to know if there is rules for this example. Sometimes, an adjective is indeed necessary. I wasn't suggesting that you shouldm't use adjectives.

For example I'd like to make a list:
- adj1 machines
- adj2 machines
- adj3 machines...

How about this?
- big machines

Ooops, for instance I have a list:
- intelligent machines
- super large machines
- blabla machines
- different modes supported machines

So, I can't rewrite "different modes supported machines" into a phrase, and an ajective is needed. And the question had been raisen: "different modes supported" or "different-mode supported" ?

Hi,

Did you read my earlier suggestion that you are trying to create adjectival phrases that are too complex? This is still my opinion.

In your phrases, for example, is it the machines that are different, or the modes? Is it the modes that are supported, or the machines? Do the machines support different modes, or are the machines supported by different modes? Lengthy and complex

Hi Clive,

In a list, all items should have the same form. In the list above, three first items are "adj + noun", so I can't rewrite the forth differently.

About the readers, if they follow the rythm, "different modes supported machines" should be a noun-phrase, so "machines" is a noun, and "different modes supported" is an adj. In another context, it can be interpreted as "diff
