Question

Every culture and period of history has its great artists...
1- but we can't be completely sure when and why that civilisation ended.
2- although great writers of our time are more interested in fame and money.
3- and it is our responsibility to collect as much information as possible about them.
Is 3 correct?

I would go for 2 because 3 is ignoring art and focussing on the importance of information, whereas 2 is suitably focussed on the importance of art.

I'd say so. They are all grammatically correct. The question is which makes for a more coherent sentence.

1 tries to connect the fact that great artists exist in all cultures and throughout history with uncertainty about the end of "that civilization", where no particular civilization has even been mentioned previously. That makes no sense.

2 tries to connect the same fact about the existence of great artists to the claim that nowadays great writers (not artists in general) are more interested in fame and money, where nothing has been said previously about how interested in fame and money the writers in other cultures and other times were. There is no real comparison, so this makes no sense either.

3 tries to connect the same fact with our responsibility to learn as much as we can about them, where 'them' clearly means the great artists already mentioned in the first part, and thus connects back to the first part. In this case there are no disconnects, so this is the best choice.

The sentence though is always going to be part of a bigger narrative, so you could have something like -

2. Writers are the jewel of any society in which they occur, and seek out and express the meaning of life where others seek out war and worldly things. Every culture and period of history has its great artists, although great writers of our time are more interested in fame and money.

"Collecting information about them" (in 3) seemed to me a peculiar way of responding to the art they have left us
