Complete the Second Half of the Sentence

"… became a habit

"outlasting its need."

What could go in between there? Thanks.

eg Years ago it became a habit, but now it seems to be outlasting its need. This is a rather clumsy sentence.

Hi, thanks. I failed to mention the whole thing is supposed to be past tense. In other words there should be no "now." The whole event already happened.

I meant it to be …

"… became a habit that/which"

"outlasting its need."

But I really liked your example, save these pesky stipulations. Thanks.

Writing and mailing a daily letter to her mother became a habit for her, far outlasting its need.
