Grammar

Complete predicate and complete subject

is is a verb?

i cant quite understand because my teacher had this sentence in the grammar workbook
"The bison herd is growing once again."
Complete Subject Complete Predicate

ABOVE IS WHAT MY TEACH PUT WHICH WAY IS RIGHT!?!?
I PUT: "The bison herd is growing once again."
Complete Subject Complete Predicate

we had to underline the complete predicate and the complete subject so i underlined:
''The bison herd" as the complete subject and
"is growing once again" as the complete predicate. but on her answer key she did this:
she underlined the "bison herd" as the complete subject left "is" out and double underlined the complete predicate as "growing once again."

then there was this sentence:
"One popular hobby is stamp collecting."
the directions were to circle the simple predicate and the answer for the simple predicate was is but i thought is wasn't a verb

my question really is, is "is" a simple predicate and it is not a verb for the complete predicate???

PLEASE HELP MIDTERM IS TOMMAROW!!

Welcome to the forums! In general, I believe, if one is asked to underline the complet subject and the complete predicate, the entire sentence should be underlined, in two parts, of course. Is, in itself is a verb [my brother is here].

  • In this case, it is an integral part of the conjugated verb is growing , the present continuous, as "growing" by itself is not a finite verb form.
