Complement using To-Verb or Gerund

I am not sure which of the two following sentences is right or more common.

1. The worst thing I have ever done is SPENDING a lot of money repairing my old computer instead of purchasing a new one.
2. The worst thing I have ever done is TO SPEND a lot of money repairing my old computer instead of purchasing a new one.

The person who asked me said that after the superlative (the worst thing), we use To-verb as the complement of subject. Is it right? Thanks in advance for any help.
