Which is correct or common, 'complain' and 'complain of'?

In spoken English you will hear, "Why do most people complain, 'how bad everything is in life!'?" Only in this (over-) punctuated form would I consider it correct in the written language.

'Why do most people complain of how bad everything is in their life?' is fine.
'Why do most people complain about how bad everything is in their life?' is fine.
