Competition or the competition

Dear Users,

In the following sentences, should I use the definite article and if so, why?

1. Serious amateurs - maybe here's where the market is for Canon users. But then again, [the] competition has quite a lot to offer these days.

2. Sony's prices are quite steep (especially for the A7Rmk2 model) but sooner or later [the] competition will catch up.

Thanks

Only 'the' works, in both sentences. Someone who knows this technical stuff will be well aware of who the specific competition is.
