Compete with or agianst

Hello,

Which one is correct? Plants should compete with/ against acacia plant for sunlight.

Acacia is also a plant. So do acacias also compete with acacias?

Plants can't be given advice, so it's strange to say that plants should compete, which means it is advisable to plants to compete.

I think you need something like this:

Other plants compete with acacias for sunlight.

You are right. Acacia plants grow so fast and get too tall, that other plants have to compete with them for sunlight since they obscure the sky.
