Compass?

Hello. Can we use 'compass' in English with the meaning of 'guide', or 'guiding item', or 'guiding device'?

Example:

Objectives and problems serve as a compass showing researchers what they should do when unexpected things appear.

Thank you!

You can use compass in a metaphorical sense, but I can't see how "problems" serve as a guide. Your ethics serve as your moral compass and help you decide what to do. Your vision statements can serve as your compass in deciding which projects to prioritize.
