Comparison basis

Hello,

1. John is the more stupid boy/one.

For comparison , we need at least two things or persons , but in the above sentence the comparison has been indicated without the other referent.

Could anyone please comment on it?
Thanks.

It's possible that the other boy(s) are referred to in prior/subsequent sentences.

Teechr shouldn't the sentence be "John is the most stupid boy" or "John is more stupid" instead of "John is the more stupid boy"?

They're all possible.
For example,

Out of all the kids in class, John is the most stupid boy.
While David can be annoying at times, John is more stupid.
Neither David nor John are easy to handle, but John is the more stupid boy.

Hmmmm! "The" with comparative degree. Heard it for the first time. Thanks.
