Comparison!

Hello!

While I studied English grammar, I grew to wonder whether this sentence was right or not.

That is..

"....... The condition affects about twice more men than women."

I know it is right to write, "The condition affects about twice as many men as women."

I also thought the former was also right.

However, some people who are studying English like me insist that it is wrong because it is so informal and unusual.

They also said if this sentence had been one of the TOEFL questions, then it would have been the answer as it is surely gramatically wrong.

Thus, I wanted to get some pointers on this problem.

Besides, if you can point out the mistakes in my question writing itself, I would be more than happy to correct my mistakes!

Thank you!
