Comparision

1.While the owner of a condominium apartment has free and clear title to the dwelling, owners of cooperative apartments have shares in a corporation that owns a building and leases apartments to them.

2.Whereas owners of condominium apartments have free and clear title to their dwellings, owners of cooperative apartments have shares in a corporation that owns a building and leases apartments to them.

ETS prefers second one.....Can we generalise that the plural subjects should always be compare with the plural ones ,(as in the second sentence)? If not, why is second one better than first one?
