Consider both these sentences:
a) "Let the bread cool down."
b) "Let the bread cool off."
Do both these verbs mean the same?
Or does the first verb (or 'to cool down') suggests something to become LESS HOT/WARM, while the other suggests something to become at room temperature.
(b) sounds slightly strange to me. I would tend to restrict "cool off" to human (or animal) subjects. (a) is fine.
