Which is correct?
The name on the jerseys are small compared to the number.
The name on the jerseys are small in relation to the number.

Either expression would work there. However, the plural verb "are" does not match the singular subject "name". If there are several jerseys each with a different name and number then it seems better to say "The names on the jerseys are small compared to / in relation to the numbers."
