compare each time back to control within

Interpretation and subsequent post-hoc testing are guided by whether the interaction term in the 2-way ANOVA is significant. If it is significant, the authors should conclude that the time trend in the short-duration pacing group is different than in the long-term pacing group. In this case, the authors can then compare short-vs. long-duration at each time, and if they desire they can compare each time back to control within each of the short- and long- duration groups.

It's rather technical, but anyone could help me with the meaning of the sentence in bold?

Hi North, There's no earlier reference to "control" in your excerpt. " So they can compare short to long, and also if they so desire , compare short to control and long to control. That's my take, as they say.

Hi North,

There's no earlier reference to "control" in your excerpt. You probably know this, but "controls" are usually examples thrown into a study which are sort of normal cases, so that if the special cases behave the same as the normal cases in some respect, that behavior can't be attributed to the "specialness."

So they can compare short to long, and also if they so

I think this isn't good writing. I'd say:
>if they desire they can go back and perform comparisons with control/reference cases within each of the short- and long- duration groups.
