Compare & Contrast Paragraph on Abortion and Euthanasia. Proof reading for improvement?

Abortion and euthanasia may seem like two totally different ideas but a more thorough investigation reveals that they are quite similar. One main fact is that they both revolve around ending an organism's life in order to minimize the miseries of others. For example, abortion is killing the embryo or the fetus before it fully develops into a baby. While it may sound harmful, it is legal and it serves a great purpose. If a woman was raped or molested and became pregnant, this can be the solution to getting rid of the unwanted baby. And even if the baby was a result of a silly mistake of not practicing safe sex, it won't force the upcoming parents to raise a baby that they were unprepared for. On the other hand of abortions, the concept of it is basically killing a human being. Others believe that those that get pregnant by mistake shouldn't be able to get an abortion because they aren't being responsible for their actions. Meanwhile, euthanasia is a way of killing painlessly, usually for those that are terminally ill or have an incurable disease. What's great about it is that if there is no hope of ever recovering from the illness and you are in need of life support in order to barely hang on to life, it would be beneficial for both the patient and his/her family members to just let them go. By allowing them to die, they will die on their own terms, rather than forcing them to live and letting the disease take over. But the negatives of euthanasia is that it can be abused by physicians who have the power to use this method of killing for personal uses. And more importantly, though the chances of recovery from certain diseases may be minimal, it is a known fact that some overcome this mountainous feat. All in all, both are controversial issue that are alike in many ways.

I am pretty sure my topic sentence and my conclusion is very weak so I'd like to hear opinions on how to fix them please Emotion: smile

Hi IPlay; Welcome to the Forums. You have selected an extremely controversial topic, indeed. I think that your thesis (that euthanasia and abortion are similar) is OK, but the arguments are weak.

  • The subjects are most similar in that they are at the crux of societies' most controversial and impassioned debates: the sanctity of human life and societies' responsibilities towards its preservation, versus the rights of individuals most affected by a difficult decision.
  • Euthanasia: Does a human being have the right to choose to end his or her own life in a humane manner?

Alright, thank you for your input. I will attempt to strengthen my arguments. But isn't the sanctity of life mostly a matter that religious people are concerend about? I am trying to remain as non religious as possible.

I don't think so.
Most societies punish murderers because most all people believe that it is wrong to take another person's life. That is sanctity of life.

The debate here just deals with questions on "what is human life?" That's a pretty pr
