compare between- legitimate or questionable usage?

Lately I've been seeing more and more of this construction, and I was wondering if it was considered correct, and if so, how exactly should it be used? (I can't understand why you would say "compare between x and y" when "compare x and y" seems wholly adequate. Am I wrong?)

Thanks in advance!

I would say both are useable grammically. But "compare between x and y" can be used to make more complex sentences. ", which sentence do you think is more sophisticated^^?

I would say both are useable grammically. But "compare between x and y" can be used to make more complex sentences. For example, if you say, "when you compare between x and y, you can reached the conclusion that...", compared (ahaha, a pun...ish) to "compare x and y to discover...", which sentence do you think is more sophisticated^^? XD

This is my opinion tho.
