As we move firmly into the information age, we are writing with the keyboards as much or more as with pen and paper. Computers and smartphones are fundamental equipment in business or engineering community. Even when both of the methods serve the purpose of putting words together into visible text, there are also some important differences.
Writing and typing are used to convey information. However, in handwritten text, all of the beauty and flaws are attributed to the writers, and more information about the author, especially emotion, can come out. They are easily changed with excitement or fatigue, while the typewritten words look the same regardless of whether they were produced by a tired author or a delighted one. Because type is standardized and there are no flourishes or misshapen words to worry about. In other words, the appearance of the words forms the first factor in writing.
Speed is the second factor in writing. Writers like to put their ideas down, in ink or electrons, as they come, moving from the brain, through the hand, to the paper or screen. Taking notes in the class or a meeting, which requires the writers processing someone else’s ideas, is facilitated by having fluency in writing or typing. Using a pen and paper to write force the writers take an eye on forming legible words - keeping in a line, not overlapping, not too big or too small. On the other hand, typing will free the author form looking at the words, so more attention will be paid to the actual ideas.
Both styles of writing convey information to the reader, whether the reader is a stranger, a close friend or the writer himself. Misspellings, awkward sentences and incorrect grammar can be found in both of these styles. However, it is much easier to get away with an error in handwriting than in typing. A character can be ambiguous in handwriting - is that an o or an a - whereas the choice must be made when the keyboard is used. Type, on the other hand, is facilitated by various kinds of software that can support the writers in spacing, layout the concern and correct some common misspelling, incorrect grammar or other errors.
In short, words convey ideas, whether they are handwritten or typed. They use the same symbols, with some minor variations, and produce words at varying speeds. Writing by hand shows more individualization, skills, attention while forming the words. On the other hand, typing makes the differences because it is standardized, legible and supported by modern software and equipment. Which one is better? It mainly depends on the skills, the hand of the writer and the eyes of the reader. Either way, there will no doubt have both forms of writing with us for years to come.
