compare * and # ?

Hello!

I think that if I want to use the phrase " compre A with B", A and B should share any qualities similar. That is, two different things in a category should be followed after the word 'compare,' If my thinking is right, the coming sentence seems wrong. Tell me if the sentence is right or not, please!

......................................................................

One such system involves comparing the period of dimming and brightening of the light from a star with its general brightness.

............................................

The above sentenc compared 'the period' with 'the brightness'. I think it would be wrong logically or semantically. Isn't it?

Thank you ! ^ ^
